One of the most loyal and enduring friends is a Schipperke. This wonderful little dog was originally a working dog on barges. Responsible for security, barking at any unusual person or event to alert the captain and crew, for eliminating vermin from the barge, a task that everyone wanted done but no one wanted to do and for nipping at the heels of the towing horses to get the barge moving. Today you will see it as a family friend that loves to be on (not in) the open waters in a boat. And to think that it has been said that Schipperke training is impossible. It is true that they are head strong and can be stubborn but these are the exact reasons that they need to be trained.
When embarking on the rewarding event of owning one of these dogs, just keep in mind that you are the boss. The Schipperke was bred down from the forty pound Belgian sheepdog to become a breed of their own. They usually weigh between twelve and eighteen pounds and only stand about ten to thirteen inches tall. This delicate appearance disguises the fact that they hail from stock of tough herding dogs. Remember this when Schipperke training is upon you. You must be able to set the limits, make the rules and continue to be consistent in enforcing them. If you give in, they will see this as an opening to take control. Regaining this control could take a life time.
The life span of the Schipperke is at least fifteen years, which could be a very long time if it misbehaves. The first three years in this dogs life is the most important as far as Schipperke training. One great recommendation is to enroll your little friend in dog school. Remaining in the program until you are confident that you have verbal control of your dog is imperative. Before ending your dogs schooling, be certain that they are not going to question your authority at every turn. They must respond to your commands instantly.
Of course, there are some behaviors that you will not be able to train out of them, no matter how much Schipperke training they go through. The sweetest thing that this breed will do is follow you around the house, incessantly. They feel so loyal, and want nothing more than to be with their owner. It has often been noted that if a Schipperke is forced to find a new home that they will cease to exist. They have been known to keep watch at the bedside of their fatally ill owner. Ownership of a Schipperke can be a challenging task, but if taken to heart and with the proper training, can be one of the most rewarding relationships in life.
